DA boosts farm sector with energy-efficient cold chain and logistics

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is enhancing farm productivity with energy-efficient cold chain and food logistics systems. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. issued Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 5, outlining measures to reduce post-harvest losses, ensure food safety, and secure a stable supply of agricultural and fisheries products. Poor infrastructure has long led to high transport costs, wastage, and food insecurity.

Under its investment plan, the Agriculture and Fisheries Logistics Office (AFLO) will set up cold storage warehouses, refrigerated trucks, ice plants, and other logistics facilities to support farmers and cut post-harvest losses. Solar-powered ice plants, each with a 10-metric-ton daily capacity, will help preserve produce, extend shelf life, and minimize spoilage—benefiting farmers, improving supply efficiency, and expanding market access, especially in remote areas.
